Just looking at some of the screenshots on the Square Enix site for the Final Fantasy VII Re-release brings back memories of what I still regard as the greatest game I ever played. Going by what’s shown in the announcement trailer, it looks like the graphics will stay the same, but there will be a few new additions. The game will have a few Web-based features—achievements, Character Booster, and Cloud Saves.

Achievements and Cloud Saves are pretty straight forward. The game will have 36 achievements to unlock, and the Cloud Saves feature will let you save your game to the Web, then pick up where you left off on any PC (a hint that this will have an “always online” requirement?).

The Character Booster feature sounds like an in-game market. Square Enix has a brief description of it on their site, describing it as follows: “Find yourself stuck on a difficult section or lacking the funds to buy that vital Phoenix Down? With the Character Booster you can increase your HP, MP and Gil levels to their maximum, all with the simple click of a button, leaving you to enjoy your adventure.” We’ll see how that goes…

But new features aside, Final Fantasy VII is a fantastic game. It doesn’t have an official release date yet, other than a brief “Coming Soon,” and a note it will be available on the Windows PC exclusively through the Square Enix Store.
